As a mortgage banker or mortgage broker, how many times have you seen a puzzled potential homeowner come into your office? Often times when people are buying homes, they have a lot of questions but are afraid to ask for fear of looking silly. Maeve Brown, co-director of Housing and Economic Rights Advocates, states "Housing counseling services seem to be the best kept secret." What I want to know is why is it secret? For the guidance and clarification of the process they provide, I would have believed it was a household word. The people who utilized their service would be so pleased, they could not keep themselves from telling their friends, family members and co-workers. If more people went to housing counseling before purchasing a house, this would alleviate some bad financial choices. Then when they came to the banker or broker, you would be reminding them of information they already received and make their decision to utilize you easier. Maybe the bank offers a housing counseling seminar. Same could be true for the mortgage broker, maybe that particular agency offers housing counseling to ensure some individual attention to customer's needs and goals.
